California Wildfire Grants & Insurance Discounts (2026 Guide)
California is the only state that requires insurers to discount premiums for wildfire mitigation. Learn what you can get, what qualifies, and how to apply.
Insurance Discounts (Safer from Wildfires)
California's Safer from Wildfires regulation requires every admitted insurer that prices on wildfire risk to offer discounts for documented wildfire mitigation.
CA FAIR Plan Discounts (as of Nov 15, 2025)
- Up to 12 discounts available for mitigation actions
- ~13.8% off the wildfire portion of premium (dwelling coverage)
- ~16.4% off the wildfire portion of premium (commercial coverage)
- Discounts apply to documented, completed mitigation actions
Private insurers also offer discounts under this same regulation. Private market rates and discount structures may vary.
Free Home-Hardening Retrofits (CWMP)
The California Wildfire Mitigation Program (CWMP), managed by Cal OES and CAL FIRE, provides free home-hardening and defensible-space retrofits to low- and moderate-income homeowners in high-risk communities.
